Where
Southwest Virginia: The Heart of Appalachia
Tazewell County, Virginia’s Baptist Valley area, is beautiful and historically significant. Set in the Blue Ridge Range of the Appalachian Mountains, it has been inhabited for centuries by Native American tribes and settlers who first arrived in the area during the late 18th century. The land known today was originally part of the vast Fincastle County before being divided into Tazewell and Russell counties in 1799.
The area gained its name from the numerous Baptist churches founded during the 19th century by settlers who had migrated to the region in search of religious freedom. During this period, many of the smaller towns in the area grew rapidly and eventually became part of larger communities, such as Richlands and North Tazewell.
Today, the Baptist Valley area is a popular destination for tourists exploring the region’s history and natural beauty. Visitors can take guided tours highlighting points of interest, including old churches, historic homes, and the nearby Appalachian Trail.
The Appalachian Trail is an iconic American hiking and outdoor recreation trail. It runs along the ridgeline of the Appalachian Mountains from Maine to Georgia, but only a portion of it passes through Tazewell County, Virginia. At about 25 miles in length, this section of the trail is considered both challenging and stunningly beautiful, with breathtaking views and diverse wildlife.
